Rohit Tappeta assisted on the opening score two minutes into play and followed with two goals to help Flathead crush Helena Capital 5-0 in Western AA boys soccer play on Friday.

Tyler Keller and Connor Griffin completed the scoring.

Glacier led 3-0 at the half.

“Great to be home to open the season for conference play,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said.

“We played composed, got a lot of guys minutes.”

Glacier opened the league season a year ago at Helena Capital and lost 2-1.

“That (defeat) haunted us all season,” Billiet said. “Coming out like that today, getting a decisive win, that will be a big confidence boost.”

Whitefish 5, Livingston 4

LIVINGSTON — Everything came easily for the Whitefish in the first half.

In the second half, nothing did.

The Bulldogs survived a second-half surge to take a decision against Livingston.

“We kind of held on more than anything,” Whitefish head coach John Lacey said. “We were pretty wasteful with some of our chances.”

Of Whitefish’s 15 shots on goal, Lacey said 10-12 of them came in the first half.

The Bulldogs converted several of those chances, racing out to a 4-1 lead after scoring three times in eight minutes near the end of the first half.

After Whitefish scored again to open the second half, Livingston scored three second-half goals to cut the margin, though it ultimately was not enough.

“We need to learn to play with a lead,” Lacey said. “We haven’t been used to being that team the past couple of years. We’re still young.”

Whitefish returns to action today at noon against Belgrade High.

“We still feel good about beating a good team,” Lacey said. “I’d rather have these kind of close games than (blowouts). Our team is going to learn from it.”
