Whitefish topples Polson in straight sets

POLSON — Cailyn Ross tallied a match-high 10 kills and Becca Catina led Whitefish in assists and aces as the Bulldogs topped Polson in straight sets — 25-10, 29-27, 25-13 — in a matchup of Class A volleyball teams on Tuesday night.

Catina accounted for 17 of Whitefish’s 23 assists in the match and half of its six aces.

Marlee Bender was strong at the net for the Bulldogs, recording six of their nine blocks.

Kyler Lundeen led Polson with 23 digs, and Kaelyn Smith added six kills for the Pirates.

Whitefish — Kills 28 (Cailyn Ross 10); Blocks 9 (Marlee Bender 6); Digs 64 (Serena Hemmingson 23); Assists 23 (Becca Catina 17); Aces 6 (Becca Catina 3).

Polson — Kills 16 (Kaelyn Smith 6); Blocks 2 (Individual leader N/A); Digs 50 (Kyler Lundeen 23); Assists 14 (Jaycee Frydenlund 6); Aces 5 (Paige Noyes 2).

Libby at Whitefish

The Libby-Whitefish soccer match that was cancelled Tuesday afternoon will be made up Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The times will remain as originally scheduled, as the girls will play at 3 p.m. and the boys will follow at 5 p.m.

The match was postponed due to excessive smoke in the Flathead Valley. Air quality on Tuesday was deemed “very unhealthy” by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
