Bad weather, but track goes on

Conditions were far from perfect on Tuesday afternoon for the Kalispell Mini-Invitational at Legends Stadium.
A light drizzle fell for most of the afternoon, and temperatures hovered in the low-to-mid 40s.
But for most teams in attendance, it was great to simply be outside for a track and field event, even if the weather was far from ideal.
“It’s good to have a meet,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said. “Given the way the spring is, just glad we were able (to compete).”
A late snowfall has blanketed the state and cold temperatures have helped sustain much of the snow from winter, many schools have struggled to hold scheduled meets as originally planned. Some teams can count on one hand the number of times they’ve practiced outdoors in the five-week-old season.
“The big thing is we got the meet in,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said. “The majority of the athletes that were here got on the track and did the best they could under the conditions.
“Most of the kids were anxious to perform.”
Fresh off performances at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in California last weekend, Glacier’s Annie Hill and Flathead’s Ben Perrin each limited their number of events but came away with wins.
Hill finished the 1,600-meter run in five minutes, four seconds, besting Bigfork’s Bryn Morley by five seconds. Perrin crossed the line half a second ahead of Glacier’s Elijah Boyd to win the 800-meter run in two minutes flat.
Ethan Larson and Drew Turner, both of Glacier, shared the titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Larson won the 100 while Turner finished second, and the two Wolfpack runners swapped spots in the 200.
Glacier’s Hunter Nicholson took home wins in the long jump, triple jump and high jump.
Dawson Rinehart was a highlight for Flathead, winning both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. His brother, Camas Rinehart, finished third in both events.
“(Dawson has) been a four-year track athlete,” Hodge said. “Absolutely one of the hardest workers I have.
“He was one of the athletes who was biting at the bit to be in a track meet today.”
Boschee said he was pleased with his jumpers, as freshman Kennedy Crosby won the triple jump with a mark of 32 feet, 10 inches and two freshmen eclipsed 15 feet in the long jump.
But relatively little regard was given to times and marks on Tuesday. For most, it was simply nice to be outside.
“The kids are tired of (practice); they’re sick of each other,” Boschee said with a laugh. “It’s just nice to get a meet in.”
