Wrestling USA Magazine named Flathead the No. 37 team in the nation after the Braves captured a second consecutive Class AA team title at the state wrestling tournament in February.
Led by individual state champions Payton Hume (170 pounds), Tucker Nadeau (182) and Michael Lee (285) and 12 additional state placers, Flathead finished the season with a 21-2 record and romped past runner-up Bozeman for a 66-point win at state.
The Braves were last nationally ranked in 2008, when they rose to No. 9 in the country under Jeff Thompson’s leadership. Thompson also led nationally ranked teams in 2004 and 2007.
Sidney, the Class A state champion, checked in at No. 47 in the nation.
“This makes quite a statement about how tough Montana wrestling is with two teams nationally ranked in the top 50,” Thompson said. “This is just a great honor to be recognized as one of those top teams in the nation. This is one of those honors that team members will remember and tell their kids.”
