Legion Baseball Hellwig, Glacier Twins trample the Trappers, 12-2

LEWISTON, Idaho — Tom Hellwig doubled twice and drove in five runs as the Glacier Twins hammered the Hyrum Trappers (Utah) 12-2 on Friday morning in the opening American Legion baseball game of the Northwest Class A Regional Tournament.

The Twins scored in every inning but the third.

Starting pitcher Coby Clark-Dickenson went four innings. Jack Schwaiger pitched the fifth.

Clark-Dickenson (10-1) allowed one hit, walked two batters and struck out three.

“He was efficient,” Glacier coach Scott Murray said. “He put the ball in play. He got a few strike outs, too.”

The key for Clark-Dickenson was holding him under 60 pitches so he could throw again on Sunday.

Clark-Dickenson also belted two doubles. The Twins had 15 hits, seven were doubles.

Hellwig and Clark-Dickenson were both 3 for 4. Terek Bistodeau, Schwaiger and Matt Morrison had two hits each.

“The guys came alive with their bats,” Murray said. “We didn’t do that at state. We didn’t have the luxury of making moves with substantial leads.”

Caleb Archibald, who went 3 2/3 innings for Hyrum, suffered his first loss of the season.

Nathan Hader (8-3) will be on the mound for the Twins (39-15) today at 4:30 p.m. (PDT) versus the Burley Green Sox of Idaho. The Green Sox beat Diamond Post No. 21 from Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday 5-4 in eight innings.

In Friday’s other first-round game it was Cody (Wyoming) Cubs 16, North Coos (Bay, Oregon) Water 3.
