Local wrestlers finish tourneys with solid placings
GREAT FALLS – Several local grapplers had strong outings at the C.M. Russell Holiday Wrestling Classic in Great Falls this weekend.
At 205 pounds, Ronan’s Justin Mays lost a 12-7 decision in overtime of the championship match to take second place. Earlier, he defeated Glacier’s Colby Martin 8-3 in the semifinal.
Martin went on pin Columbia Falls’s Jakob Freeman in the fifth-place match.
Tre Krause of Glacier finished in third in 285, taking down Bozeman’s Tom Walkup in overtime to win the third-place match 3-1.
“Really excited for Tre and Colby. For Tre to get three big wins today and come back for third after a long first day is a true testament to his toughness,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.
“He made some great technical adjustments which made a huge difference.”
“Colby showed he belongs in the same category with the best guys in the state,” he added.
Colten McPhee (182) of Columbia Falls also went out on a high note, pinning Mason Corcoran of Missoula Big Sky in :26 in the fifth-place match.
Glacier finished tied for 14th in the team standings with 91 points. Columbia Falls was 19th with 75 and Ronan right behind in 21st with 74.5.
Browning was 22nd with 73 and Whitefish had 57.5 points to finish in 26th.

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – Flathead finished in eigth place at the Tri-State Wrestling Tournament, and had three wrestlers earn sixth-place finishes.
The Braves’ Cole Eastwood (106), Zabyin Stewart (160) and Tanner Russell (170) all lost after reaching the fifth-place match of their respective weight classes on Saturday.
“We just keep getting better,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “We are very proud of how much this team has improved from the beginning of the season. Our conditioning and technique are much improved and we are attacking from the start of the first whistle to the last whistle at the end of the match.”
Polson’s Bridger Wenzel lost a 7-3 decision in the 152-pound third-place match to take fourth.
The Pirates managed 64 points as a team to take 25th.
