Delno Huber Moore, 93

Delno Huber Moore passed away Dec. 17, 2018.

Del was born “at home” in Burley, Idaho, to Ira and Letitia Moore. Del attended grade and secondary school in Burley. He was active in livestock judging and farming.

He joined the Army in the Army Specialized Training Program and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia. He went on to join the men’s 86th Infantry Division in Louisiana, serving in the Regimental “I and R” Platoon, as an intelligence scout in Europe and the Pacific fronts. He was discharged in 1946 and thus entered the University of Idaho under the GI Bill.

He met Jean Gray who was also attending U of I and they were married in 1947. His passion for farming and livestock carried on as he served on the Livestock, Dairy and Dairy Products judging teams. The blessings of their marriage were their children, Nancy and Nick.

Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, he taught in Malta and Emmet, Idaho, and was an extension agent for the University of Idaho.

He and Jean homesteaded in the Columbia Basin, Washington. He later taught biology in Moses Lake, Washington, and vo ag in Lind, Washington, for four years, whereupon they relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, where he taught advanced biology and was department chairman at West High School.

Career achievements included Teacher of the Year two times, honor roll teacher for Alaska, also awarded Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year for Alaska. He was selected to be Science Department chairman and taught advanced biology at Bartlett High School. Jean was most supportive with every move, enjoying new adventures and friendships while active with church, camping, hiking and square dancing.

His career expanded to include U.S. Immigration inspector in Alaska, and he was selected to assist starting the new Immigration Station in Calgary, British Columbia.

Jean and Del retired to Kalispell in 1979. Friendships blossomed during these 38 years in Kalispell, traveling with Good Sam’s Club, Heritage Club and 34 elderhostel excursions.

Del was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jean, son Nick and siblings Vanda Holyoke, LeRoy Moore, Juan Moore, and Maycella London.

Surviving are daughter Nancy (Mike) Otness of Somers, grandson Trevor Southard, and great-grandson Zane of Gig Harbor, Washington; also grandsons, Matt and Jon Moore of San Diego; Jon has been awarded a four-year fully funded Ph.D. Program in Texas.

Del’s life was dedicated to encouraging family, friends and students with a zest for living life well.

His love of nature was enriched by his education, educating others and the many journeys he and Jean enjoyed and carries on today in the nurturing of his vast array of flowers adorning the patio of his residence.
