PASCO, Wash., – The Flathead wrestling team won four duals before falling in the championship match to take second place at the Best of the West duals event in Pasco, Wash., on Friday.

The Braves began the day with wins of 59-15 over Ellensburg (WA), 77-6 over Southridge (WA), and 45-27 over Tahoma (WA).

Flathead edged the third-ranked team in Washington, Chiawana, 36-34 to reach the championship dual, where they fell 50-23 to Newberg, the second-ranked team in Oregon.

“It was a great day, I’m very proud of how our kids improved,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

Thompson was especially happy with Tanner Russell’s performance. Russell went 5-0 at 170 pounds, winning three matchs by pin and two by technical fall.

“He’s a great team leader, and he gets better every single match,” Thompson said.

Cole Eastwood also went 5-0, getting a pin in all his matches at 106.

“He will be a threat at 103 pounds when we get back in the state of Montana,” Thompson said.

Fin Nadeau (132) had a strong performance, losing a tight 8-5 decision to Tahoma’s Austin Michalski but winning his other four matches, including a pin in the championship. Zaybin Stewart (160) also went 4-1 and racked up four pins.

The Braves will be back on the mat today in Pasco for the individual event, starting at 9 a.m.

“What a great way to start the first half [of the season],” Thompson said. He said the team will get four days off after today “to get our bodies recovered physically and emotionally.”
