Bouda, Popp 1st at state swim; Flathead boys 3rd

GREAT FALLS — Flathead, led by state record breaker Jamie Bouda, placed third at the State Swim Meet on Saturday at the Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool at Great Falls High School.

The Braves finished the two-day event with a 125-point total, edging Helena High by a point for third place.

The Flathead boys did not score a year ago at state.

Missoula Hellgate topped the standings with a 304 score. Bozeman, 143, was second.

Hellgate, with 359 points, and Bozeman, 212, finished 1-2 as well in the girls team standings. Missoula Sentinel, 152, was third and Glacier, 101, fourth.

“We came out and swam hard today,” Flathead/Glacier coach Major Robinson said.

“We had a lot of great individual and relay performances. It was an awesome team effort and a great end to the season. We had great time drops and a few state champs and even a state record. We broke multiple team records this weekend and are excited for the years to come. This weekend we announced to the state that the Kalispell schools are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”

The Glacier girls placed second and third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, respectively, while the Flathead boys were third, fourth and sixth in the three relay events.

Glacier junior A.J. Popp won the 200 freestyle by five seconds and placed second in the 100 freestyle.

Glacier’s Caroline Dye was third in the 100 freestyle.

Bouda, a senior, won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. He lowered his own state record from Friday in the 50 freestyle by nine-tenths of a second in Saturday’s finals and missed the 100 breaststroke state record by a tenth of a second for the second day in a row.

Glacier’s Alex Bertrand was sixth in the 200 individual medley.

The Whitefish boys and girls finished second behind Billings Central in Class A. The Columbia Falls boys and girls were both fourth.

The Whitefish girls won state last year.
