Fusion 14U team wins Winter Classic at Woodland Park
The Flathead Lady Fusion 14U hockey team captured its first Winter Classic championship after compiling a 4-1 record against the visiting Las Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Wild, Bozeman Ice Dogs and Missoula Bruins last weekend at Woodland Park.
Each skater recorded either a goal or an assist over the course of the tournament.
Kenzie Baker led the charge offensively with 10 goals and seven assists in the five contests. Mariah Dickey contributed seven goals and four assists, while Nya Barber-Castro tallied eight goals and two assists.
The Fusion opened the tournament on Friday night with a 6-3 win over the Golden Knights, a game in which goalie Courtney Klemann saved 13 shots.
It suffered its lone loss of the tournament on Saturday morning, falling 11-6 to the Ice Dogs. Flathead rebounded later Saturday, winning two games — 7-4 over Missoula and 11-5 versus the Wild — to remain in championship contention.
The Fusion avenged its loss to Bozeman on Sunday, overcoming a three-goal deficit to down the Ice Dogs 8-4 and win the title. Klemann saved 27 shots in the victory.
The Fusion travels to Miles City for league matchups on Feb. 2-4 before heading to Bozeman for the state tournament on Feb. 9-11.
