Artist proposes blacksmithing retreat near Bigfork

A proposal for a camp and retreat center near Bigfork will be considered by the Bigfork Land Use Advisory Committee on Thursday, Jan. 25.

Jeffrey Funk, a well-known metal artist, is requesting a conditional-use permit to establish the retreat center on 10 acres at his home, 990 McCaffery Road. He intends to develop a facility with blacksmithing-themed education activities and cabins for guests, according to the Flathead County Planning Office.

The property is zoned suburban agriculture with a 10-acre minimum lot size.

Funk has been working with iron, bronze, stainless steel and other metals for more than 30 years in his shop outside of Bigfork. Traditional blacksmithing is his anchor craft, according to Funk’s website. He also has been teaching classes, giving workshops and demonstrating his skills around the country for 25 years.

The Bigfork Land Use Advisory Committee meets at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8559 Montana 35, in Bigfork. The committee will make a recommendation on the proposal that will be forwarded to the Flathead County Board of Adjustment for its meeting on Feb. 6. Board of Adjustment decisions are final, and are not considered by the county commissioners.
