Wolfpack splits, Braves sweep mat duals vs. Helena schools

Glacier’s Kael Willis (113), Caden Gilmond (160) and Mason Torrez (170) were all 2-0 in matches wrestled for Glacier against the Helena schools on Saturday afternoon at Glacier High School.

All three won twice by pin.

Cody Frost (103) won by pin and a forfeit for Glacier.

Glacier topped Helena High 54-21, but lost to Helena Capital 47-21 in the final dual action for AA teams before the Western seeding tournament this weekend at Flathead.

The state tournament is Feb. 9-10 in Billings.

Glacier won seven of the 11 matches in dominating Helena High. The Wolfpack’s other 12 points were off Helena High forfeits at 205 and 285.

Glacier won three of the 12 matches in the loss to Helena Capital. Capital forfeited at 103.

“I think overall the team as a whole is starting to flourish in each individual’s focus areas,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“We’re looking forward to one more good week of practice leading up to the seeding tournament. We are focused on peaking when it matters. It was our Senior Night, and on behalf of the team, I’d like to thank Andrew Glynn and Connor DeReu on their contributions to our program the last few years. They are two great individuals and they will be missed.”

Glynn (152) won by pin against Helena High and dropped a major decision versus Helena Capital.

DeRue (205) won by forfeit versus Helena High and was pinned in the Helena Capital outing.

Flathead 39, Helena Capital 24

Flathead 59, Helena High 13

Tanner Russell (145), Garrett Rieke (160), Payton Hume (170) and Tucker Nadeau (182) all were 2-0 in mat action for

second-ranked Flathead in Western AA duals with visiting Helena.

Russell won by decision and a pin while Rieke, Hume and Nadeau all won twice by pin.

Nadeau improves to 41-0 on the season.

Winning by pin and a forfeit for Flathead were Brendan Barnes (103) and Alex Paull (285).

Quick pin honors were shared by Barnes and Hume at 34 seconds. Rieke was next at 40 seconds. All three were recorded against Helena High.

Flathead won 8 of the 11 matches wrestled against Helena High. The Bengals forfeited at 205 and heavyweight.

The Braves won six of the 12 matches against Capital, but picked up a forfeit at 103.

“We knew going in this week that Capital has a real solid team and they put up a fight today,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

“We really pulled through with the pins and Tanner Russell got redemption on the Capital wrestler that beat him earlier in the year. Russell is really peaking at the right time and has had some great showings this week.

“Also, our seniors really wrestled well for Senior Night against Helena High. My hat goes off to all our amazing seniors that put so much blood, sweat and tears into the Flathead wrestling team. They are all going to be truly missed. Cody Moats, Joe Batello, Payton Hume, Tucker Nadeau, Hunter Wellcome and Alex Paull all got wins versus Helena High.”

Up next for Flathead is the Western AA seeding tournament this weekend at Flathead.

The state tournament follows Feb. 9-10 in Billings.

Flathead finished the dual season with a 21-2 mark.
