Fast times there for the taking at Archie Roe

Fifteen schools and more than 1,100 athletes are expected to converge on Legends Stadium in Kalispell today for the famed Archie Roe Invitational track and field meet.

Comfortable temperatures and mostly clear skies are forecasted, weather that could lead to more of the fast times the meet has become known for over its nearly 40 years of existence.

Three records were broken in the 2017 running of Archie Roe.

Glacier’s Annie Hill obliterated the meet mark in the 800-meter run, lowering the time to beat from 2:14.03 to 2:11.62. Hill also broke her own record, which she set in 2016, by more than two seconds when she clocked a 4:47.30 in the 1,600.

The Glacier boys relay team broke its own record, as well, in the 400 relay.

Scout Willcut, Ethan Larson, and Drew Turner — all of whom ran on the record-setting 2016 relay team — joined forces with Jackson Pepe to set a new benchmark at 42.79 seconds in 2017.

Hill will have a final opportunity to rewrite the record books today, but she’ll have to overcome other top talent to do so.

Bigfork senior Bryn Morley holds the fastest time in the state this year in the 1,600 and is second to only Hill in the 800.

The girls records most likely to fall based on performances thus far this season are in the jumps.

The top marks in Montana so far this year in the long jump, triple jump and high jump would all be enough to top the current Archie Roe records.

On the boys side, the top marks this year in the 3,200, shot put, discus and pole vault all are better than the current Archie Roe records.

Among the most likely boys to insert his name into the record book is Flathead distance standout Ben Perrin.

Perrin, who won the 3,200 at last year’s Archie Roe, will gun for records belonging to his brothers in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Zach Perrin holds the 1,600 mark at 4:16.64, and Jake Perrin has the best 3,200 time at 9:13.

Ben Perrin ran a 9:04.56 in the 3,200 earlier this year at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in California, but his top time so far this season in Montana is 9:39.70.

The Archie Roe Invitational is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. today.
