Vikes, Vals punch ticket to state

BIGFORK — Three Bigfork golfers carded season-best rounds and earned a spot in next week’s state tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the Class B Division 3 golf tournament at Eagle Bend Golf Club.

Augie Emslie posted an 83 to finish sixth among boys. Isabella Santistevan fired 97 to take seventh on the girls side, and teammate Melissa Paulsen was just off the pace with a 102, good for 10th.

Brandon Hopkins, who shot 92 for 14th place, also qualified for state for Bigfork, as did Carly Stodghill, who finished 13th after carding a 107.

The Bigfork girls qualified for state as a team with a third-place finish.

The top four teams and top 15 individuals at divisionals earn state berths.

Manhattan edged Missoula Loyola by a stroke — 354 to 355 — to earn the boys team divisional title. Loyola cruised to the girls championship with a 353, well clear of Three Forks’ 409.

Bucky Crippen of Loyola was the boys medalist with a 74, and Loyola’s Kylie Esh took top honors among girls with a 77.

The Bigfork boys finished sixth as a team with a score of 397.

The state tournament will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 15-16, at Eaglerock Golf Course just outside Billings.

Johnston reigns

at Lake City Open

POLSON — Libby’s Ryggs Johnston bested the field by four strokes to take the Lake City Open amateur championship with a two-day total of 138 at Polson Bay Golf Course.

Johnston, a three-time high school state champion for the Loggers, fired 66 in Round 1 on Saturday to take a commanding lead before shooting even par in Sunday’s second round to close out the tournament.

Kalispell’s Logan Lindholm was runner-up with a two-day total of 142.

Whitefish’s Brad Grattan and Missoula Loyola standout Bucky Crippen tied for fourth at 146.

Joey Moore, the reigning Whitefish Lake Golf Club 4th of July Tournament champion, tied for ninth with a 148.

Tyler Carlson won a three-hole playoff with Jim Mee of Libby to capture the championship in the professional division with a 135.

Ryan Malby of Kalispell was third and one shot back.

Kalispell’s Ryan Porch carded a 141 over two days to tie for sixth among the pros while Jess Roper tied for eighth with a 142.
