Kalispell Lakers AA, A in Canadian Days finals, again

The Kalispell Lakers have advanced to the AA and A championship games of the Canadian Days American Legion baseball tournament.

Lakers AA split on Saturday, losing to the Spokane Northstars 6-2 in an afternoon test but rebounding with a 7-2 win over the Calgary Redbirds in the evening.

That put the Lakers AA at 2-1 in tournament play.

The Lakers A also split Saturday, losing to the Cranbrook Bandits 3-1 after beating the Mission Valley Mariners 3-2 for a 2-1 tournament mark.

Today’s championship day has Calgary versus Spokane at 10 a.m. at Griffin Field. At Archie Roe Field, also at 10 a.m., Cranbrook faces Olds.

In the A and AA title games at 1 p.m., Mission Valley A plays Lakers A at Archie Roe Field while Lakers AA face Boys of Summer at Griffin Field.

Both Lakers teams are defending tournament champions.

Taylor Morton homered and drove in three to compliment a strong effort on the mound by Drew Scherrer to help the Lakers AA rebound from an afternoon loss and down the Calgary Redbirds.

Morton joined Randy Stultz and Eric Seaman as Lakers with two hits in the nightcap. Morton and Stultz also scored two runs apiece.

Drew Scherrer did the rest, holding the Redbirds to two unearned runs on three hits in a complete game. Scherrer also struck out eight batters.

In the opener, the Lakers got to Spokane starter Colton Miracle for eight hits but struggled to cash in, leaving nine on base in the loss.

Seaman and AJ Jones tallied two hits and a run apiece for the Lakers.

Dawson Smith took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings of work. He fanned five.

Ryan McDonald checked the Mission Valley Mariners on five hits over six innings to pick up the win at Archie Roe Field in the Canadian Days A tournament.

He struck out four and walked five batters.

Kalispell could muster just five hits by five different players. Connor Drish, Thomas O’Connell and Jayden Dillon had RBIs for the Lakers.

Ben Corriveau stole three bases for Kalispell and scored once.

In the second game of the day, the Calgary Bandits broke a 1-all tie with a two-run sixth inning.

The Lakers could muster just three hits, singles by O’Connell, Wesley Palmer and Ben Corriveau.

Reid Barrows took the loss for Kalispell He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He walked three batters and fanned four.

Five-run innings in both games of a doubleheader carried the Bitterroot Bucs A to a sweep of the Glacier Twins A in a conference matchup.

Dan Seymour had two of Glacier’s seven hits while Coby Clark-Dickenson doubled in the first game. Trailing 3-0, Bitterroot scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to win the opener 11-4.

Bitterroot, leading 4-1 after five innings, tallied five runs in the sixth to put the second game away.

Zach Veneman had two of Glacier’s six hits and drove in a run. Forrest Kobelt tripled.

Glacier had a rough day in the field with 10 errors total.

Glacier (1-3 overall) plays at the Kalispell Lakers AA on Saturday for a three-game Memorial Day Series.
