Glacier boys stare down history

| May 25, 2018 10:38 PM

The Daily Inter Lake

GREAT FALLS — Glacier has had its fair share of solid finishes at state track and field.

The Wolfpack boys were runners-up in 2012 and 2013, took bronze in 2011 and 2015 and have finished within the top five teams each of the last seven seasons. One place, however, has eluded the program.

“We’ve brought home a lot of divisional trophies, and we’ve come home with silver and bronze (at state),” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. “But never the big one.”

Glacier has a chance to change that today.

The Wolfpack leads the field of boys teams by nine points after Friday’s action at the Class AA state track and field meet at Memorial Stadium. Thirty-seven points was enough to give them a decent advantage over Bozeman’s 28, and with a strong cast of contenders still left to compete today, Deck is hopeful his team can hang on and make history.

“We might be a couple points behind I thought, but nothing, I think, that we can’t overcome if we stay the course and keep believing in what we’re doing,” he said. “I think the kids know what’s in front of them, so we’ve just got to take care of one event at a time.

“We’re planning on having a pretty big afternoon (Saturday).”

Glacier set the tone Friday from the opening gun, literally.

The Wolfpack’s 400-meter relay team — Drew Deck, Mark Estes, Drew Turner, Ethan Larson — blew away the field and flirted with the all-class state record with a time of 41.68, its best of the year by a wide margin.

“Our sprint relay team started us off,” coach Deck said. “They ran a heck of a race.”

Turner, Estes and Larson followed with solid performances in the 400. Turner won in 48.80, and all three finished in the top five.

Estes also finished second in the long jump.

The Flathead boys are in fifth place but just outside trophy position with 20 points, only four behind third-place Helena.

Individual standouts were Michael Lee (second in shot put), Dawson Rinehart (third in 400) and Ben Perrin (fourth in 1,600).

Glacier’s girls are in a similar position as the Braves, sitting in a three-way tie for fourth with Missoula Big Sky and Billings West. All have 24 points and are on the heels of third-place Billings Senior, which tallied 28.

Bozeman and Missoula Sentinel are well clear of the field and locked in a tight race for the state title with 59.5 and 56 points, respectively.

Glacier’s Annie Hill won the 400 comfortably (2:10.94) and placed third in the 400.

Adrian Schnee placed in the 400 and the high jump for the Wolfpack.

Flathead’s girls are 11th with 6.5 points.

Placers included Madison Boles (high jump), Megan Rieke (pole vault) and the 400 relay team.

Action continues today at Memorial Stadium.

Class A

LAUREL — Northwest A athletes picked up four individual wins on Day 1 of competition at the Class A state track and field meet at Laurel Sports Complex.

Whitefish’s Lauren Schulz edged Belgrade’s Bella Pacheco by just 0.15 seconds to win the 400-meter dash (59.44), Polson’s Bea Frissell ran away with the 3,200 (11:23.92) and Columbia Falls’ Angellica Street won the javelin by more than 20 feet (147 feet, 7 inches). Gavin Strom of Libby won the boys long jump (22-05).

Libby’s Emily Mossburg finished second in the high jump and third in the 400.

Columbia Falls’ Genevieve Delorme was third in the 800.

Ben Windauer, also of Columbia Falls, was second in the pole vault.

The Whitefish girls are in the thick of trophy contention with 19 points, good for a third-place tie with Corvallis and Belgrade. Columbia Falls is eighth, Libby is tied for ninth and Polson is 11th.

The Libby boys also are pushing for a trophy, sitting in a tie for fourth with Laurel after Day 1. Both are two points behind third-place Belgrade.

Columbia Falls is sixth and Whitefish is 14th.

Class B

LAUREL — The Bigfork girls state title defense is off to an excellent start.

The Valkyries piled up 44 team points, more than enough for a comfortable lead, on Day 1 of the Class B state track and field meet at Laurel Sports Complex on the shoulders of individual wins in three events.

Bryn Morley won the 800-meter run (2:13.55) and 3,200 (10:46.41) by huge margins, and Haile Norred topped the field in the 400 (58.91).

Morley was fourth in the 400.

Anya Young also pitched in for Bigfork, finishing second to Morley in the 3,200 and fifth in the 800.

Colstrip and Deer Lodge are tied for second in the girls team standings with 16 points.

Eureka is 16th with 2.33.

The Eureka boys are 12th with four points, all of which were provided by Stetson Miller’s fourth-place finish in the discus.
