Polson fourth at Class A state softball
FRENCHTOWN — Polson committed six errors total, two in the fatal seventh inning, in a season-ending 9-8 loss to Frenchtown at the Class A state softball tournament on Saturday morning.
Tied at 8-all, Frenchtown’s Meg Delaney led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single, Dana Jacobs reached on an error and Kylie Habeck flew out for the first out.
Brynn Leishman followed and flew out to right field. Delaney, however, tagged up on the play, advanced to third and scored on the over-throw to win it.
Lexi Orien homered in the second inning, a solo shot to center field, for Polson. It was her first of the season.
Mikaila Neilson homered in the fifth, a three-run blast, for Frenchtown.
The loss gave Polson a 2-2 mark at state and the Pirates ended the season with a 20-6 mark overall in placing fourth.
Polson had a first-round bye in the tournament on Thursday and beat Frenchtown in the quarterfinals 10-7. The Pirates trailed 7-0 in that one.
Polson’s Kaelyn Smith finished her prep career with a school-record 152 stolen bases. She was never thrown out.
In a late Friday game, Smith hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Josie Caye homered with one runner on in the third as Polson beat Lewistown 7-1 in loser-out action.
Belgrade won the state championship Saturday afternoon, beating Hamilton/Darby 7-2.
In the third-place game, Hamilton/Darby beat Frenchtown 9-4.
