A burst of mixed precipitation followed by much colder temperatures is expected to sweep across Northwest Montana on Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, snowfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches is possible at elevations above 4,500 feet. Valley locations could see a quick 2 inches of snow with the passage of the cold front.

Precipitation will begin with most valley locations seeing a rain or rain/snow mix out ahead of the front. The front is expected to make its way into Northwest Montana around the Friday morning commute hours, the Weather Service stated in its forecast discussion.

“Temperatures will quickly drop, bringing a change from rain to snow, but also bringing a period of potentially very icy roads as temperatures fall and gusty northeast winds develop,” the Weather Service warned.

Meanwhile, mountain passes could see significant snow totals.

Clearing skies will bring very cold temperatures both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Lows in the Flathead will approach single digits Saturday night.
