'The Snow Queen' shimmers in land of ice and snow

Flathead High School Theatre presents “The Snow Queen” at 6:27 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 4 and 5, in the David M. Hashley Theatre at FHS.

Enter the fantastical world of Hans Christian Andersen with the timeless tale of enduring friendship. Based on the same Danish tale that inspired the hit coming-of-age Disney film “Frozen,” “The Snow Queen” is a coming-of-age story as young Gerda embarks on a courageous quest to save her best friend Kai from the evil clutches of the Snow Queen.

“After the Snow Queen’s evil mirror breaks, scattering shards of it to Earth, young Kai turns evil after catching a fragment in his eye and heart,” said Director and Acting 2 Instructor Liz Sykora. “Bewitched by the Snow Queen, he runs away from home. Gerda attempts to rescue Kai, encountering many characters along the way. Each encounter teaches her something that allows her to find her inner strength and fortifies her resolve to find Kai, despite not knowing where he is or how to save him. The innocent love found in this friendship is the thread of the story ... tying all of the characters together.”

In the glimmering in a land of ice and snow, the story of “The Snow Queen” will appeal to children and adults alike and will take the audience on a journey of friendship like no other.

“There is a sense of wonder and magic about this show.” Sykora said. “That’s not to say it has cool special effects, but it’s so pure and simple in the way it is told. It’s not flashy. It’s just a story of a young girl and her desperate quest to save her childhood best friend..”

With subtleties in the storytelling, “The Snow Queen” will entertain kids of all ages and adults, too.

This production of “The Snow Queen” is presented by the FHS Acting 2 Class. Acting 2 is one of nine classes offered at FHS as part of the Theatre Program curriculum. Acting 2 students learn about various theories of acting in the classroom setting and then participate in a theater production, which allows the students to experiment with acting techniques and creating characters.

The cast of “The Snow Queen” includes Jade Dickerson, Domminik Griffith, Kirya Henderson, Tanah Jakeway, Felix Heisch, Athena Shaffer, Ashley Denison, Bella Myton, Carmen Gray, Isaac Glace, Dalton Brubaker and Cameron Price.

Behind the scenes Daniel Edelen, Lydia Wood, Alyssa Johnson, Rebekah Hopps, James Francis, Kay Gibbs, Matthew Nairn, Angeliegh Storr and Cahira McDowell make up the stage, lighting and sound crew.
