Flathead, Glacier golfers chasing titles at invitational

Flathead and Glacier are contending for individual and team titles at the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament.

The Flathead girls, led by sophomore Marcella Mercer, lead the team standings with a 374 total following Wednesday’s action at Northern Pines Golf Club.

Mercer is second in individual play, trailing Missoula Sentinel’s Emily Garden, who shot a 7-over 79, by a stroke.

Mercer was the medalist last week in Helena.

Helping Flathead top the standings was the play of Jillian Wynne and Cassidy Lavin. Both shot 93 and are in a three-way tie for sixth place.

“I was proud of their ability to go out there, grind and manage the course well,” Flathead coach Kyle Dunfee said of his top three.

“One more day.

“Overall, they competed well,” Dunfee said of his team.

“Cassidy Lavin had her best round under my watch. I would guess that she was happy with her play.”

Sentinel’s boys had the best score with a 313 total, but Glacier is right there in second at 319. Hamilton is third at 323.

Connor Mora of Great Falls High and Jack Johnston of Sentinel top the leader board with 1-over 73s.

Keaton Cassidy of Glacier is third with his 75 and Trey Kelley of Polson is fourth with a 76.

Only seven strokes separate Cassidy from Glacier’s No. 4 scorer. Ethan Purdy and Will Salonen both shot 81 for a three-way tie for 11th place. Sam Manaker turned in an 82.

The tournament ends today with the final 18 holes at Buffalo Hill Golf Club. Play starts at 10 a.m.

“I’m elated,” Glacier coach Jim Schaible said of the effort by his boys and girls

“It was just such an emotional day with the rain delay, two groups of people who couldn’t finish and lightning in the middle of the golf course.

“Keaton just kept it together. Even when a shot put him in jeopardy, he got it back. On 18 he was in the deep grass, beat it out of there, put it on the green from 130 to 140 yards out and made the putt for par. He survived, made the good plays.

“Trunkle had a good hole on 18,” Schaible added.

“She chipped one in from 40 yards out for a birdie. Obviously that makes a kid feel great. Her game has improved steadily the last couple weeks. I hope it continues.”
