Johnston in front by 4 at Class A state golf

HAMILTON – Ryggs Johnston of Libby carded a 5-under 67 for a four-shot lead in the Class A state golf tournament at the Hamilton Golf Club on Friday.

The senior is after his fourth straight state title between Class B and Class A.

In the team competition, the Whitefish boys are fifth with a 338 total. Whitefish’s Cameron Kahle shot a 1-over 73, good for sixth, while Andrew Brozek is tied for 14th after a round of 80.

Polson is in sixth with a 352 score, 14 strokes behind Whitefish. Matt Hobbs led the way for the Pirates with a 74, tied for seventh.

First-place Laurel sits at 289. With a similar performance today, the Locomotives could break the two-day Class A team record of 589, also set by Laurel in 1999.

In the girls competition, Whitefish is holding in second place with a 378 total, 11 strokes behind Laurel. Ella Shaw is fourth with an 88 to lead the Bulldogs, while Megan Archibald carded an 89 and is tied for fifth.

Polson had a 412 total to share sixth place with Sidney. Cali Cannon of Polson shot a 92 to tie for ninth.

Libby’s Sammee Bradeen is tied for 15th after carding a 95.

Tricia Joyce of Butte Central tops the girls leaderboard with a 3-over 75. Macee Greenwood of Corvallis is three strokes back.

The top 15 individuals earn all-state honors.

Play resumes at 10 a.m. today with the second and final round.

Class AA

BUTTE – The Glacier boys finished fifth as Bozeman cruised to a sweep in state play at the Butte Country Club.

After ending Thursday tied for fourth with Missoula Sentinel, Glacier’s golfers stumbled on Friday and finished with a score of 644, 16 shots behind third-place Billings West.

Keaton Cassidy and Sam Manaker led Glacier in a tie for 20th. Both shot 82 on Friday after 78s on Thursday a 160 totals. Glacier’s Will Salonen was tied for ninth after the first day, but fell back to a tie for 22nd after carding an 85 on the final day.

Bozeman freshman Justin Verge topped the final leaderboard with a 138, six shots clear of his teammate and twin brother, Jordan Verge. Jack Johnston of Sentinel shot a 69 on Friday to vault into third place. Flathead finished in last place with a 743 total, led by Ezra Epperly’s 177.

In girls play, Flathead settled for seventh with 779 total. Marcella Mercer began the day tied for third, but carded an 82 and finished tied for fifth with 160. Just six strokes separated Mercer from winner Annika Danenhauer of Bozeman.

The Glacier girls placed ninth with 815 total. Kate Trunkle led the way for the Wolfpack, tying for 20th with a 165.
