Double play helps Libby slip by St. Ignatius, 5-4
LIBBY — Libby turned in a game-ending double play after St. Ignatius loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 5-4 nonconference softball victory on Thursday.
The game was originally scheduled for St. Ignatius, but moved to Libby because of field conditions. The St. Ignatius softball fields are flooded.
This was the season opener for St. Ignatius.
Floyd Carvey, Libby activities director Nik Rewerts and Libby maintenance worker Ken LaFaunt worked on the Libby softball field the day of the game to make sure it was playable after recent rains.
Carvey’s daughter Emily plays for Libby.
The double play started when left fielder Ashlyn Monigold hauled in a routine fly ball for the second out, and threw the ball to the infield, which tagged second base for the final out when the runner did not tag up in time. The bottom half of the inning started with Olivia Garland reaching on a single and Courtney Mitchell belting a home run to center field to get St. Ignatius within a run.
St. Ignatius then used three straight singles to load the bases.
Taylor Holm went 3 for 4 for Libby. She tripled and drove in a run.
Linsey Walker, 2 for 4, had two doubles for the Loggers while McKenzie Proffitt, 2 for 4, and Sheyla Gallagher each doubled once.
Libby (3-1) has a Northwest A softball game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Polson.
St. Ignatius has a Western B-C double header, weather permitting, today at Eureka. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
