Film club screens 'Always,' filmed in Libby

| August 22, 2019 8:19 PM

The Historic Film Club screens the classic romantic drama “Always” at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the Museum at Central School.

Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) is a talented aerial firefighter whose risk-taking and heroic tendencies often put him in danger. Filmed in Libby, Steven Spielberg’s “Always” is the story of when Pete’s tendencies finally caught up with him. From the afterlife, Pete is charged with guiding a new firefighting pilot named Ted Baker, a job that becomes more difficult as Ted begins to fall for Pete’s still-living girlfriend Dorinda (Holly Hunter).

“Always” is a remake of the 1943 film “A Guy Named Joe” starring Spencer Tracy, with the added benefits of special effects that enhanced the film’s ethereal tone.

Although not a huge box office hit, “Always” involved several of Hollywood’s biggest names, including John Goodman and composer John Williams, in addition to Dreyfuss, Hunter and Spielberg. Spielberg originally wanted Sean Connery to play Pete’s angel, but when he proved unavailable, Spielberg cast Audrey Hepburn in what proved to be her last film.

There is no charge for the film, and donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of showing the films. The movie and popcorn are free; wine, beer, pop and water will be for sale. Seating is provided, but film fans can bring their own floor pillows, portable chairs, or whatever is comfortable for viewing the film.

The Museum at Central School is located at 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. Call 406-756-8381 for more information.
