Glacier wrestlers second at Varsity Duals
RONAN — Glacier finished second after two days of wrestling action at the Ronan Varsity Duals on Saturday.
Glacier opened the final day with wins over Stevensville 59-9 and Columbia Falls 42-21 before falling in the final to Frenchtown 34-30. The outcome of the 205 match, decided in overtime, gave Frenchtown the win as Levi Downard decisioned Justin Olson 9-7.
“Another great day for the team as a whole,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.
“We had a few younger guys step in the lineup this weekend in Justin Olson at 205, Camryn Vergeront at 285 and Thomas Putnam at 103 and they just competed fearlessly. It was fun to watch.
Glacier went 4-0 on Friday to finish first in its pool.
“Getting to the finals was a great experience for our kids and is huge step in the growth and development of the team,” Dankers said.
“It was very valuable to get into that intense environment and compete well. It makes it that much more familiar when seeding and state rolls around.”
Glacier’s Thomas Putnam received a MHSA medal of Sportsmanship for his exemplary exhibition of his sportsmanship in his match against Stevensville’s Deven McLane at 103. Putnam won by a tech fall.
“Thomas Putnam is a great kid with a great heart and it was great to see him recognized by the tournament director and Hall of Fame Coach Dave Edington in front of the entire tournament,” Dankers said.
“We constantly talk about living a championship lifestyle on and off the mat and Thomas was a perfect example of what that means. So proud to see a freshman soaking up what this program is about and putting it into action.”
Columbia Falls defeated Polson 45-27 in the third/fourth place battle.
