Schulz leads ladies field at 4th of July golf tourney
WHITEFISH — Thunderstorms interrupted part of the first day of the 83rd Annual Earl Hunt 4th of July Tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Friday but golfers managed to finish all 18 holes, albeit a bit later than they may have expected.
On the North Course, Coral Schulz finished 3-under par with a 69, the best score of the day to lead the women’s division.
Schulz leads defending champion Jasi Acharya by one stroke. Acharya shot a 70. Schulz finished sixth at last year’s tournament.
Shealyn Hafer is third with a 71.
Shawn Tucker, Conor Rooney and Liam Clancy ended the day in a three-way tie for first place in the men’s divison, each carding a 70 on the South Course.
Rooney finished fourth last year.
Tied for second with 71 are Marty Mehl and Byron Olson and Joe Stover.
Sam Krause, Payton Taylor, Mark Mance and Sean Ramsbacher are tied for third.
Defending champion Rich Boswell finished 2-over par to lead the senior division with a 74.
In second are Brett Bennyhoff and Ron Ramsbacher, each with 75.
Bennyhoff was third in the senior division last year.
There were 240 entries to this year’s tournament.
Men’s entries were so high that there are five flights including the championship flight taking the course at their scheduled tee times.
The men played the South Course on Thursday and the women the North Course.
On Friday, the women will play the South Course and the men the North.
The divisions will switch again on Saturday, the last day of the tournament.
Last year, Cory Mehl claimed the men’s title but has since turned professional and is ineligible to compete in the tourney.
Acharya won the women’s title in 2018.
Play begins at 7:30 a.m. on each day of the 54-hole tournament.
