Wildfire near Ronan burns 450 acres

A large burnout operation was planned Friday in an attempt to contain the lightning-caused Moss Ranch Fire burning 14 miles southwest of Ronan, on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

The fire was burning in grass and timber along a steep, rocky, rugged terrain. It was estimated at 450 acres and 10% contained. No structures or other infrastructure were threatened, and no evacuation notices were issued.

The fire is being managed by a local Type 3 Incident Management Team, according to CSKT Fire Prevention Specialist C.T. Camel.

Local firefighters continue to secure control lines.

Because of dry fuel conditions, rugged and steep terrain and expected warmer weather, a burnout operation is a primary focus.

160 crew members are involved in the burnout operation, which started Friday morning and included A 1 Type II Initial Attack Crew, 2 Type II Crews, Air attack, 1 Type 3 helicopter, 3 S.E.A.T.’s, four dozers, six skidgens, and one ambulance and four water tenders assigned to the fire.

Nenemay Road and FB-4000 Road were temporarily closed. People are advised to stay out of the area.
