Lakers down Billings Royals
Claim two of three games in series
The Daily Inter Lake
Randy Stultz was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI as the Kalispell Lakers dumped the visiting Billings Royals 5-2 in Sunday’s American Legion baseball game.
The Lakers wound up claiming two of the three games in the conference series, as they defeated Billings 15-14 in eight innings on Saturday night. The Royals claimed the first game, 3-2, in nine innings.
The Lakers and the Royals have had a recent history of slugging it out — Saturday’s contests marked five straight games of extra innings between the two, dating back to last season.
“We were a play away in game one from getting the sweep,” said Kalispell coach Ryan Malmin. “Wesley Palmer was great in a seven-inning effort,” he said.
The Lakers were also one play away from losing Saturday’s second game.
“It would have been disastrous. We persevered and we found a way to win, being down to our last out. AJ Wood competed his butt off on the mound in extra innings,” Malmin said.
The Lakers finished the game with 12 hits. Stultz was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Eric Seaman had a solo home run in that game.
“(Sunday) was putting all parts of the game together. Jack Corriveau threw consistent, quality pitches in a 99-pitch complete game effort, we played errorless defense behind him, were aggressive on the bases, and had quality at-bats early in the game.”
“It was fun to see guys get back to playing our brand of baseball and finishing as we have struggled to do that in the first two conference series despite having late three-run leads in four of the losses,” Malmin said.
“We must build on today and create the consistency we have lacked in recent weeks. That comes from understanding the difference between playing not to lose versus playing with a competitive chips and understanding what it means to compete.”
On a side note, the Lakers A contest scheduled for 5 p.m. today against the Libby Loggers, has been rescheduled for June 25.

CRANBROOK — The Glacier Twins dropped an early heartbreaker, but bounced back big to claim the second game of Sunday’s American Legion baseball doubleheader.
The Twins and Cranbrook were tied at one in the bottom of the fifth when a Bandit batter doubled to bring in two runs. Glacier got one run back in the top of the sixth, but ultimately fell 3-2. But the second game was all Twins, as the floodgates opened right away — nine runs in the first inning — and they rolled to a 14-3 victory.
Jack Schwaiger led the Twins at the plate in the first game, going 2-for-4. Zach Veneman had a double and Austyn Andrachick and Jay Tyree each had RBI. Nathan Hader allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four Cranbrook batters, but took the loss.
Stevyn Andrachick and Schwaiger both doubled in the nine-run first inning of the second game. Schwaiger was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Coby Clark-Dickinson, allowed one hit and struck out seven to pick up the win.
