Community band plans March 20 concert

| March 14, 2019 2:00 AM

The Flathead Valley Community Band presents its concert, “An Evening of Adventure — from Mt. Everest to the Pirates of the Caribbean” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the Flathead High School auditorium, 644 Fourth Ave. W., Kalispell.

Under the direction of Allen Slater, the concert will open with Louis Ganne’s “March Lorraine,” written in 1892 as a spirited and patriotic opening march for the international gymnastics meet held on France — a wonderful opener for a night of adventure circling the globe. Music from Belgium, Spain, England and the Americas will be featured, as well as a salute to Leonard Bernstein in honor of his 100th birthday with the “Overture to Candide.”

The band will also perform four of the six movements of Dmitri Shostakovich’s second Jazz Suite, composed in 1938 for the state orchestra of Russia light music.

Another highlight is Rossano Galante’s piece titled “Mt. Everest” which captures the epic grandeur and beauty of the famous mountain, the highest on earth. The sweeping woodwind lines along with massive brass chords really highlights the strengths of the community band.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badlet comes from the movie by the same name. The driving rhythms and lyric melodic lines create a perfect conclusion for the concert.

There is no admittance charge for the concert but there will be a free will donation to help cover the cost of the concert. A reception will follow in the FHS commons.
