The season for song begins this month with the introduction of an intensive song-writing course offered during Flathead Valley Community College’s first summer session.

Instructor Dee Fleming, music teacher and regional performer, will lead students in the four-week course, The Craft of Songwriting, coaching them through the composition process of lyrics, melodies and more.

Fleming boasts around 30 years of experience in music instruction, including teaching classes at both FVCC campuses and at various middle and high schools in Arizona and Montana. She has produced six albums and performed live at events and venues across the state.

Students will meet for one two-hour session each week to discuss rhyme patterns, lyrics, melody, message and other aspects of the music-writing industry while also working on developing their own original songs.

The course requires no musical or compositional experience, and musical instruments will be provided.

Classes will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays for four weeks, from May 16 to June 6.

For more information about the course, contact Fleming at 480-233-2086 or d_flemingmusic@hotmail.com.

Participants must be registered FVCC students in order to take the course.
