Flathead, Glacier athletes enjoy a productive day

A dramatic victory for the ages in the high jump, a successful title defense along with an unbeaten season on the track, and a long, but very busy and productive day for a gifted and multi-talented athlete were a few of the highlights turned in by Flathead and Glacier on Friday during Day 1 of the Class AA state track meet at Legends Stadium.

Flathead senior Madde Boles survived a tense, back and forth jump-off battle with a determined Anna Trudnowski of Butte, but pulled through in the end to win the high jump (5-5).

Flathead senior Ben Perrin led from start to finish to make it two straight state championships in the 3,200 (9:25.07). He jumped out to a big lead, nearly 100 yards for several laps, and his final margin of victory was four seconds.

Flathead senior Kyle Calles capped off his season by winning the 800 (1:58.76). That follows a disappointing seventh place finish at state a year ago.

And Glacier junior Drew Deck placed fifth in the long jump (21-9), ran on the Wolfpack fourth place 400 relay team and placed sixth in the 400 (50.80). He also ran in the 110 hurdles prelims.

Today, he will compete in the triple jump, 110 and 300 hurdles and maybe the 1,600 relay.

“I got a couple personal bests, but didn’t place as high as I wanted,” Deck said at the conclusion of Friday’s action.

“But the main goal is to place and score points for the team.”

Deck wants to compete in the 1,600 relay today, “but we’ll see,” he said.

“We have tons of guys ready to run if I don’t.”

On the team front, the favorites are off to great starts.

Missoula Sentinel, 55, and Billings West, 37, are 1-2 in the boys standings.

Bozeman, 56, and Billings West, 32, top the girls.

The Flathead boys are holding down third place with 33 points.

The meet concludes today with field events starting at 9 a.m. and track events at 10:30

Five girls cleared 5-5 in the high jump, but Boles and Trudnowski were the two finalists with no misses after no one cleared 5-7. That put the duo in a head-to-head competition, which at one point seemed like it would never end, to determine the champion and the runner-up.

The jump-off started at 5-6, and both missed.

That dropped the crossbar down to 5-5, and both missed again.

At 5-4, Trudnowski, who always went first in the jump-off, grazed the bar, but not enough to knock it off.

Boles easily cleared that height to force another go for both girls

Both missed at 5-5 and 5-4, but easily cleared 5-3 and 5-4. With the bar back up to 5-5, Trudnowski knocked it off with her legs. Boles followed with a clean jump to win it, immediately knelt in the pit, covered her face with her hands and cried.

“Oh God, it was so emotional,” Boles said.

“The jump-off really made it even more emotional … like a roller coaster ride.”

Boles had a season best of 5-6 while it was 5-5 for Trudnowski.

“I was just trying to tell myself I was going to get over that,” she said on all of her must-win attempts.

“No negative thoughts. I thought on every jump it might happen.”

Boles finished fourth at state a year ago.

“It feels great,” she said of being a state champion.

“Kind of hard to believe. I will remember it for the rest of my life.”

Trudnowski smiled after Boles made the winning jump. The two later embraced after meeting with coaches.

“I’ll also remember Anna from Butte,” Boles added.

Calles has been waiting for his championship moment following a tough 2018 campaign. An ankle injury after the opening weekend last year delayed his return until just before divisionals and state.

“That was my main motivation in the offseason,” he said.

He responded by posting a personal best time.

“I got out in front and it was fast start,” he said.

“I tried to stick with it the whole way.”

He did slip to second briefly on the sprint home, but pushed through.

“Leading has been my thing,” he said.

“That was my eighth 800 win. I’ve led every race. That seems to be working for me.”

Flathead’s other high placer was Seth Moon, who was second in the long jump.

On the record front, Delaney Bahn of Bozeman won the long jump with a big-time distance of 19-3.75. The all-class state record for that event was 18-11 3/4 and was co-held by Julie Leneger of Dillon (2001) and Lexie Miller of Flathead (1979).

Mya McNeely had the best performance for Glacier’s girls, placing second in the shot put with a throw of 39-0.
