Polson runner-up at state A softball
POLSON — The Polson Pirates are the Class A state softball runner-up after losing 11-1 to the back-to-back winner Belgrade Panthers in the championship on Saturday at Polson Softball Complex on Saturday.
Polson beat Frenchtown 7-6 and Hamilton 6-2 in loser-out play to earn a spot in the title game.
Hamilton beat Polson 2-1 on Friday in second round play, which sent the Pirates to the loser-out bracket.
Polson had three hits on the day as the Pirate batters were stymied by Belgrade pitcher Erin Elgas, the tournament MVP.
Lexy Orien, Kallie Finkbeiner and Katelyne Druyvestein each had one hit for the Pirates.
Druyvestein had Polson’s only RBI.
Belgrade scored seven runs in the second inning of the championship game and capped it off with four runs in the fifth.
Olivia Cook homered for the Panthers.
Pirates Lauren Vergeront, Kaylanna DesJarlais and Josie Caye were named to the 2019 All-Tournament team. Kobbey Smith and Orien were honorable mention all tournament selections.
