| May 26, 2019 2:00 AM

The Lakeside Ambulance/QRU (Quick Response Unit) is having its seventh annual Ham Dinner fundraiser from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the QRU Community Hall in Lakeside, 201 Bills Road. The Lakeside QRU is a nonprofit organization with an executive director, 20 emergency responders, two modern, fully-equipped ambulances and an aid car. The QRU volunteers have been responding to the emergency medical needs of the community for 38 years.

Vista Linda Catering of Somers will be serving dinner featuring ham, homemade scalloped potatoes, coleslaw, vegetable, rolls, dessert and beverage. Tickets are $10, available at the door; children under 6 eat free.

A raffle of prizes donated by area merchants will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $1 each. You do not need to be present to win.

Lakeside QRU responders will be on hand for questions and information.

The organization recently formed Lakeside Ambulance Auxiliary, a group of community members supporting the Lakeside QRU through community outreach, fundraising and pubic relation activities. Volunteers are always needed for emergent and non-emergent roles. For more information, call Lois Lauman at 857-3512 or 253-2841.

Kids get to run big equipment at Rotary Day

Kalispell’s Noon and Daybreak Rotary clubs are joining forces for Dig Rotary Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 8.

Kalispell Rotarians will be helping families get a safe, up-close, hands-on experience with heavy equipment like excavators, dump

trucks, graders, bulldozers, skid-steer loaders and more. The event is located at Kalispell North Town Center near the intersection of U.S. 93 and Rose Crossing.

Children of all ages will get the chance operate the equipment themselves with help from operators. The first 500 children will also get to make a wooden toolbox from Home Depot.

Food trucks will be available for refreshments.

“We know that kids and parents are going to get a kick out of being around big equipment that they usually have to see from a distance,” said Kelly Bilau, Dig Rotary Day co-chair. “We’re excited that so many local companies jumped in to provide equipment, fuel and a location for this event.”

Admission is $5 per person or $20 for a family of five or more. All funds raised will be invested in a splash pad planned along the new proposed Kalispell Trail through downtown. The exact location is still being determined, but plans will be moving forward once initial funding is in place. This public water park will feature a non-slip surface and lots of water and shower features in the shape of trees, flowers and other inventive shapes. Because there is no pool or standing water, splash parks are safe for all ages and accessible to people of diverse physical abilities.
