Glacier's Hill takes AA title; C-Falls, Eureka boys state champs
GREAT FALLS — It was an eventful day for Flathead Valley teams at the All-Class State Cross Country Tournament at Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls on Saturday.
Glacier’s Simon Hill won the Class AA boys title, Columbia Falls boys repeated as Class A boys champions, the Eureka boys won the schools first-ever state cross country title, the Flathead girls were third in AA team standings and the Whitefish girls placed fourth in Class A.
Hill ducked it out with rival Ian Curtis of Missoula Hellgate for a thrilling finish.
“It was something else,” said Hill, who is committed attend the University of Montana.
Hill started breaking free of the pack about a mile and a half into the race, according to Glacier cross country coach Jacob Dietz.
“Simon just kept attacking,” he said.
It came down literally to the wire.
Curtis and Hill were neck and neck for the last 40 meters from the finish line.
“The day was his,” Deitz said. “It was pretty awesome. He had a phenomenal race.”
Hill beat Curtis by just over one second.
“Having it be the last high school race in Montana that we’ll run together, being able to finish leaving all on the line and knowing that, it counted for a lot,” Hill said.
Hill continues a streak of nine consecutive state XC champions from the Flathead Valley.
“Just so happy that I can make my team proud and make my school proud and bring home a state championship win,” Hill said.
Conditions were not ideal on the course. Several inches of snow fell in Great Falls overnight and the course walk was cancelled. Runners adapted by putting spikes on their shoes, being careful in corners and mindful of other runners.
Temperatures didn’t rise above 30 degrees and melting snow made it muddy in places.
Sloppy conditions didn’t stop the Columbia Falls boys from repeating as champions in Class A.
“Kids out there handled [it] really well, and ran great,” Columbia Falls coach Jim Peacock said. “Times were still fast, it was a good day. We’re thrilled beyond belief to put together a good day on the right day. All seven of our runners did exactly what they set out to do.”
Aidan Jarvis placed fourth for the Wildcats and James Role was seventh.
The top 15 runners in every class earn All-state honors.
James Petersen was Columbia Falls’ other all-state runner in 11th place.
“Our boys did a nice job of picking out and trying to get past the runners ahead of them,” Peacock said. “It’s never easy to repeat as a state champion, they put together a really good day out there.”
Columbia Falls girls were fifth, with Lara Erickson in 12th.
Erickson was in second place most of the race but faded later on. Peacock was impressed.
“The kid ran really gutsy and hard,” he said. “Pretty exciting.”
Peacock was also pleased with the fifth place overall finish from the Columbia Falls girls team.
“The team did a good job on the girls side,” Peacock said. “They have nowhere to look but up from here.”
Tori Noland Gillespie earned all-state honors with her 15th place finish and led the Bravettes to a fourth place finish overall.
Josephine Vardell was Whitefish’s only all-state runner in the girls race. Whitefish’s girls team placed third in Class A.
Eureka made history by winning its first state title in school history.
Isaac Reynolds placed third and Alex Lowe 14th to help the Lions take home the Class B title.
“On a day where it was really cold and snowy, you’ve got every cross-country team in the state competing and people out there watching,” Peacock said. “It is a very big sport in our state that tends to not get a lot of attention. It’s neat to see that many people out here on a blustery day.”
