Glacier beats Capital, Flathead tops Helena

The Glacier Wolfpack girls soccer team gave up a goal in the first three minutes to Helena Capital on Friday but answered the bell quickly in a 6-3 win.

“Capital is a young, dangerous team and the girls showed great resilience fighting back from giving them a goal in the opening minutes,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

Emma Paulson scored two goals for Glacier (3-0-1) and added an assist. Emily Cleveland had a goal and an assist.

Glacier faces Helena High at 9 a.m. today.

The Flathead Bravettes stepped onto the field Friday hungry for a win — and they got it in a close game against Helena High, edging out the Lady Bengals. The Bravettes had a strong first half, dominating the field with four goals.

Flathead coach Bledy Doda singled out sophomore Lily Tanko, noting that she played one of her best games of the year.

“We did our job and we scored goals. We still made some mistakes, but we played great,” Doda said. “I’m proud of the girls — they work hard and they deserve to win.”

The Bravettes (2-2) will play Helena Capital at 9 a.m.

WHITEFISH — Laurel took charge of the field on Friday, sinking five goals, while Whitefish (2-2) was unable to answer.

Coach Roland Benedict was at a loss for words.

“I have nothing to say,” he said.

They’ll have a chance to turn the tide when they face off against Polson at home at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Flathead Braves took the lead just a few minutes into the first half and didn’t look back, beating Helena High.

“It was a nice comeback after the Hellgate game on Saturday,” Flathead coach Zach Brenneman said of their earlier 6-2 loss. “Every player on the team was working hard.”

The Braves (3-1) will take on Helena Capital at 11 a.m. today.

Glacier hung on after the initial wave of Helena Capital to score three unanswered goals in the first half.

Coach Ryan Billiet complimented the team’s defense and midfield on their performances.

“They really came at us the first five or 10 minutes,” Billiet said.

The Pack hosts Helena High at 11 a.m. today.
