Swim teams qualify six more for state

MISSOULA — Glacier swimmer Caroline Dye won the 100 backstroke at Saturday’s Missoula County Invitatonal.

Glacier and Flathead chose to rest much of their varsity swim team this past weekend, according to coach Karen Bouda.

All in all, 13 swimmers stayed home from the 13 team event.

“They all have multiple state qualifying times and we chose to take more underclassmen and novice swimmers to this meet. For some, it was their first competition,” she said.

However, team captains Gus DeSouza of Flathead and Dye did attend in order to provide leadership.

Dye turned in a time of 1:02.28 in the backstroke, finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of her closest competition. She also placed sixth in the 100 butterfly.

“Caroline now has state qualifying times in all eight individual events. She can only swim two at the state meet. But what an accomplishment. It’s really incredible that she has this opportunity to swim any of the individual events,” Bouda said.

DeSouza placed fifth in 100 breaststroke.

The Glacier girls placed seventh while the Flathead girls were 13th. The Glacier boys were 10th and Flathead boys were 13th.

Other highlights from Saturday’s meet include six new state qualifiers. They are Glacier swimmers Jayna Moultray (100 free), Travis Wirtala (50 free), Emma Lane (50 and 100 free), Campbell Fox (50 and 100 free) and Jaedon Durfey (50 free) and Flathead’s Kendall Pyron (50 free).
