Basketball teams get wins over Eureka, Mission

The Vikings and Valkyries varsity basketball teams went undefeated last week, going 4-0 with wins over Eureka and Mission.

Both teams were at home against Eureka Thursday as the Valkyries held off the Lady Lions for a 53-47 win while the Vikings pulled away in the third quarter to down the Lions 48-31.

The Valkyries opened their game with a 15-4 run and led the Lady Lions 17-5 after one quarter of play, but Eureka battled back to cut the Bigfork lead to 26-21 at the half. Eureka cut the Valkyrie lead to one with 4:25 to play in the third quarter, but Bigfork refused to give up the lead.

Scout Nadeau sank a pair of clutch free throws with 1:01 to play to put Bigfork up by six as the Valkyries held on to get the win.

Ansleigh Edgerton led the way for the Valkyries, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds while Isabella Santistevan added 14 points. Emma Berreth also scored in double figures with 10 points and Ashton McAnally led in rebounds with seven.

The Vikings overcame another slow start to grab a win in their game against the Lions in the nightcap Thursday, outscoring Eureka 32-17 in the second and third quarters to pull away for the victory.

Bigfork led 6-2 after one quarter of play, but outscored the Lions 15-10 in the second frame to grab a 21-12 lead at the half. The Vikings defense forced several Eureka turnovers in the third quarter, leading to a number of easy layups and culminating in a two-handed slam by Colt Thorness late in the quarter to put Bigfork up by 19. The Vikings cruised from there as they picked up a 48-31 win.

Thorness led the way with 12 points, six blocks and four rebounds while Levi Taylor added eight points and five boards. Walker Fisher finished with eight points and four steals and Isaac Bjorge led the Vikings rebounders with seven.

Boys Friday

Bigfork 64, Mission 43

The Bigfork boys also picked up a lopsided win Friday, downing the Bulldogs in St. Ignatius, 64-43.

The Vikings outscored Mission in all four quarters, but lead by only seven at halftime, 30-22. Bigfork turned up the pressure in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 34-21 over the final two quarters to pull away.

Bjorge led all scorers with 18 points and added five rebounds while Thorness finished with 12 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Asher VanCampen contributed eight points and three boards, Wyatt Reichenbach had seven points and seven boards and Tayor added six points and six rebounds.

Girls Friday

Bigfork 41, Mission 28

It was all Valkyries Friday as Bigfork blew past Mission at home, 41-28. Bigfork led 15-4 after one quarter of play and never looked back as the Valkyries cruised to the victory.

Berreth finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead Bigfork in the win while Nadeau had eight points and pulled down six rebounds.

Edgerton led all rebounders with nine boards and added six points while Santistevan had six points and seven rebounds.

Both teams will be on the road Saturday as they take on Loyola in Missoula. The Valkyries get things started at 4:30 p.m. while the Vikings play at 6 p.m. ¦
