VIKINGS BASKETBALL

The Vikings basketball squad picked up a trio of wins in the last week, erasing an early 13-point deficit to defeat Loyola Saturday after cruising past Mission Tuesday. The team also downed Eureka on the road Monday, 61-40.

The Vikings jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter against Mission Tuesday and used balanced scoring to earn a 52-39 win. Walker Fisher led the Vikings with 10 points while Isak Epperly led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Vikings got off to a slow start against Loyola Saturday, falling behind 19-6 in the opening quarter before rallying to earn a 62-41 victory. Bigfork trailed 19-11 after one quarter of play, but held Loyola to just 22 points the rest of the game as the Vikings pulled away for the win.

“We regrouped at the end of the first quarter and used some good defense to take over the game,” head coach John Hollow said. “Our intensity wasn’t where it needed to be at the start of the game, but we buckled down and pulled out a good win for us.”

Fisher scored 15 to lead the Vikings while Cormac Benn and Levi Taylor were also in double figures with 10 points each.

The Vikings used a 16-4 third quarter run to pull away for a 61-40 win in Eureka Monday behind 11 points from Fisher and 10 from Benn. Bigfork led 31-25 at the half.

The Vikings improve to 5-2 with the wins and will be in action at Mission Thursday and at Troy Friday.

VALKYRIES BASKETBALL

The Valkyries celebrated senior night Saturday with the program’s first win over Loyola in recent years. Led by 21 points from Emma Berreth, Bigfork knocked off second-ranked Loyola 54-37.

“We ended our week on a good note by getting a win over Loyola. I haven’t beaten them since I have been a part of the coaching staff here and I know none of the girls on this team have ever beaten them, so that was a big win for us,” Valkyries head coach Cortnee Gunlock said.

Along with Berreth’s 21 points, Callie Martinz added nine for the Valkyries in the win, Callie Gamballa had eight, Scout Nadeau scored seven, Madison Chappuis had five points and Audrey Buenz and Quinn Nissan each scored two.
