Valkyries swim strong at Cat/Dog Invitational

The Valkyries swim team was in the pool close to home over the weekend as Bigfork competed in the Cat/Dog Invitational in Whitefish while the wrestling team improved to 8-1 in duals this season with a win over Florence Carleton. The Valkyries basketball team had a busy week of COVID make-up games while the Vikings were still out of action due to COVID precautions.

VALKYRIES SWIMMING

The Valkyries earned five top-three finishes at the Cat/Dog Invitational in Whitefish Saturday as Bigfork took sixth overall with 131 points.

Junior Sophi Logue led the way for Bigfork with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly while also taking second in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:07.13 in the butterfly was more than three seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Isabella Lane of Glacier High.

Senior Shelby Thompson beat her next-closest competitor by nearly six seconds in the 200 freestyle as she earned first place with a time of 2:12.84. Thompson was also third in the 50 freestyle.

Sydney Slawter took home third in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle while Soraya Brevik was 10th in the 200 freestyle and 16th in the 100. Allie Reichner earned ninth in the 100 backstroke and 19th in the 50 freestyle, Olivia Pendlay was 19th in the 100 freestyle and 12th in the 50 freestyle, Coralynn Shillam was 26th in the 50 freestyle and Grace Stewart was 20 in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Several Valkyries freshman swimmers also gained valuable experience as Ashlyn McGill was 22nd in the 100 backstroke and 27th in the 50 freestyle, Erika Dowling earned 21st in the 100 backstroke and 32nd in the 50 freestyle, Lydia Rehbein was 34th in the 50 freestyle and Kylie Kinslow was 15th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Valkyries relay teams earned fourth, ninth and 12th in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

VIKINGS WRESTLING

The Vikings moved to 8-1 in duals this season with a 39-27 win at Florence Wednesday as Ryder Nollan, Shelton Woll, Patrick Wallen, Isaac Bjgorge, Fletcher Posalwait and Archie Brevik each won their matches via fall while Dale Relyea earned a 12-8 decision over Florence’s Dallas Blair.

Woll had the fastest pin of the evening as he took down Florence’s Hayden Warriner in just 14 seconds while Wallen took down Colten Rice in 56 seconds in the 160-pound division.

The Vikings also took on Arlee’s five wrestlers in Florence Wednesday, but team scores were not recorded and individual results were not available.

The Vikings traveled to Shelby for a mixer with Shelby, Simms, Fort Benton, and Fairfield Saturday, but team scores were not recorded and individual results were not available.

VALKYRIES BASKETBALL

The Valkyries improved to 4-4 this season with wins over Troy and Deer Lodge this week, but also dropped a matchup with the Lady Lions of Eureka.

Valkyries 45, Eureka 56

Emma Berreth had 17 points and eight rebounds while Madison Chappuis added 12 points and seven boards, but it was not enough Thursday as the Valkyries fell at home to Eureka.

The team were knotted at 12-12 after one quarter of play, but the Lady Lions outscored Bigfork in each of the final three quarters to pull away for the win.

Scout Nadeau finished with nine points for the Valkyries in the loss while Alexis Saari added five and Callie Martinz had two.

Valkyries 47, Troy 10

The Valkyries bounced back with a lopsided win over the Lady Trojans in Troy Saturday as Bigfork earned a 47-10 victory.

Bigfork jumped out to a 13-0 lead after one quarter and led 30-2 at the half en route to the victory.

Berreth was the only player to score in double figures as she finished with 15 points and seven rebounds while Nadeau added nine points and eight rebounds. Callie Gambala also scored nine, Martinz added four points and Arianna Saari and Alexis Saari each scored two. Chappuis finished with two points and eight rebounds.

Valkyries 49, Deer Lodge 16

The Valkyries picked up another blowout win on the road Monday as they traveled to Deer Lodge to down Powell County 49-16.

Berreth scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half as the Valkyries built a 29-8 lead at the break before outscoring Deer Lodge 20-8 in the second half.

Nadeau finished with nine points for Bigfork while Chappuis, Martinz and Gambala each scored six and Alexis Saari and Ellie Jordt both scored four points.
