Bigfork Art and Cultural Center has received the lease from Community Foundation for a Better Bigfork for the space next door that used to house Bigfork’s library, an endeavor that will change the landscape of the building.

BACC hopes to turn its current gallery, located on the ground floor of 525 Electric Avenue, into a history museum to showcase the village’s logging and agricultural roots, Indigenous history, local pioneers, and development. Meanwhile, the old library space will be converted to a gallery with a classroom space for workshops.

“A history and cultural center that includes a makerspace would enrich the community, helping Bigfork stay vibrant, connected, and inspired for future generations,” BACC executive director Julie Bottum stated.

Design plans include a main hall to house permanent and rotating exhibits, an interactive corner for hands-on displays, and a presentation and event area to house up to 50 people. Temporary exhibits will highlight local artists, festivals, or historical anniversaries. The gift shop will remain in its current location near the front entrance of the building.

Plans for the new gallery include movable walls for exhibits and an interactive corner for multimedia displays. The classroom will have a projector, cabinetry for storage and a sink for cleanups.

The project budget is $66,000. It is donor-supported, and BACC is currently fundraising.

Phase I has already begun, with mold mitigation, wall painting, light and sink installation and new flooring for the old library space. The new gallery and workspace is set to open with a gingerbread design competition on decorate Bigfork day in November. Renovation of the museum space and final touches are expected to continue through February 2024, with an opening date to be announced.

“We aim to create an engaging space that celebrates local heritage, fosters community connections, and offers an interactive, educational experience for all visitors,” BACC stated in a press release. “This museum will serve as a cultural and historical hub, showcasing the rich stories of Bigfork’s past while providing a modern, accessible space for exhibits, presentations, and community events.”
