Bigfork baseball goes 2-1 in busy week
Bigfork’s baseball team wrapped up a packed week with a pair of wins and a narrow loss, improving to 9-4 on the season after three games against Polson, Plains-Hot Springs, and Big Sky.
The Vikings opened the week on Tuesday, April 29, with a hard-fought 7-6 road victory over Polson. Despite being outhit 9-4, Bigfork capitalized on timely run production early in the game, posting a run in the first inning, two in the third, and three in the fourth. The Vikings would be ahead of tied the entire game. Cavin Wiest led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance, while Sam Plummer and Hayden Mayer each added a hit and an RBI. Mason Lewis and Hayden Mayer split time on the mound, with Lewis going four innings and striking out four while allowing three earned runs. Mayer tossed the final three innings in relief, fanning five while giving up just two unearned runs.
On Thursday, May 1, Bigfork dominated Plains-Hot Springs in a 17-1 win on the road, exploding for 10 hits and capitalizing on eight errors by the hosts. The Vikings broke the game open with four runs in the second inning. Rylen Rodriguez had a strong outing with two hits and two RBIs, while Ryder Hamilton also tallied two hits and an RBI. The extra-base hit column featured a double from Liam Benson and a triple from Hamilton, adding to the offensive fireworks. On the mound, Holland Jantzen delivered five solid innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Rodriguez closed the game with a flawless sixth inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
Bigfork wrapped up the week on Saturday, May 3, in a back-and-forth battle with Class AA Big Sky, ultimately falling 9-6 at home. The Vikings collected nine hits in the contest but were unable to overcome a flurry of early runs by Big Sky, who plated five runs over the first two innings. Wyatt Hickey paced the Bigfork offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Plummer added two doubles and Cavin Wiest drove in two runs with a double of his own. On the mound, three Viking pitchers saw action. Plummer started the game, while Lewis and Mayer handled the bulk of the innings. Mayer struck out three in his two-inning relief stint, but Big Sky’s timely hits and Bigfork’s nine defensive errors proved too much to overcome.
