Springtime is the off season for business in Bigfork, so it’s expected to see fewer people out on the streets, in shops and sitting at bars and restaurants. But this week, the slow season came to a screeching halt as the COVID-19 outbreak effectively shut down a substantial percentage of businesses in the Bigfork area.

Bigfork Food Bank open for a single day in April
Customers of the Bigfork Food Bank have no need to panic since the facility has “ample food,” director Ann Tucker told the Eagle last Friday. However, the food bank will only be open one day in the month of April in an effort to minimize the risk of exposing volunteers to COVID-19, who are essential to food bank operations. Customers will still be able to pick up the same amount of food for the month, but will have to stop by between 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7. The food bank was previously open every Tuesday.

A woman accused of exchanging gunfire with Flathead Valley law officers Tuesday morning in Bigfork has a prior record of assault with a weapon.
Shots fired in Bigfork after deputies locate driver of stolen vehicle
Shots were fired this morning in an officer involved shooting that took place on Grand Drive in Bigfork after the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office located the driver of a stolen vehicle. No injuries were reported and the incident is currently under investigation. The suspect is in custody, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s office.

On Nov. 5, 2019, at approximately 11:05 a.m., the world lost a very loving husband, father and grandfather. Fredrick Leroy Leas JR passed away at his home surrounded by his immediate family, after an 18-month battle with cancer.

The Bigfork Land Use Advisory Committee voted unanimously to recommend denial of a zone change amendment requested by JJN Holdings, owned by Bigfork electrician Ryan Nelson, to re-zone his 5.884-acre property from SAG-5, suburban agriculture to I-1, light industrial, during their Feb. 27 meeting. Nelson explained that he was requesting the change so he could construct a shop for his business that would house a van and other supplies. During the winter months, UPS is often unable to deliver to his current residence so the Nelson’s sought a location that was easier to access.

Local to be honored as Montana Symphony Volunteer of the Year
Music has been a part of Julie Moffitt’s life ever since she started taking piano lessons as a young girl, which morphed into a love of singing and Broadway musicals. So when she and her husband Jim relocated from Florida to Montana, getting involved with Glacier Symphony, Orchestra and Chorale seemed like a natural fit. For Moffitt, the mission of sharing classical music with the community was an important one, and she’s dedicated nine years of service to the symphony’s board of directors and held the role of board president from 2017 to 2019. Next month, Moffitt be recognized for all her hard work raising funds and awareness for Glacier Symphony when she’s presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Montana Association of Symphonic Orchestras. The ceremony will take place Sunday, April 26, during the symphony’s Spring Festival at Flathead Valley Community College.

Turnout for the special bond election was 37% with 568 total voters. The bond will raise taxes by $43.94 annually per $100,000 of assessed property value.

John Charles Kluding, a Bigfork resident for the last 21 years, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020. A loving son, husband, father, uncle and friend, John was known for his sharp wit, inquisitive take on the world, and making the one person he was talking to feel like the most important person in the room. He would probably have wanted us to say something about his golf swing, and so we have.
